제목 : Unintended Consequences of Family Planning Policies on the Breastfeeding Gap between Sons and Daughters

초록 : This study reveals that the Chinese family planning policy (FPP) in the 1970s widened the gender gap in breastfeeding duration in favor of sons. Mean intensity of the FPP predicts the gender gap to be 35% greater than the gap without the FPP. The effects are explained by a combination of two factors: the FPP aggravates the tendency to stop childbearing when a son is born, and breastfeeding often stops for existing children when the mother bears another child. Accounting for the highest-parity status in the family captures the joint effects of these factors on the FPP-led gender gap. The findings indicate that the interaction between state-led fertility policy and son preference can exacerbate the gender gap in child development.
